Classes for Your Health

These classes have been given online for the benefit of members and friends of Vegetarians of Washington. The speaker, Stewart Rose, vice president of Vegetarians of Washington, is the co-author of more than 30 articles published in medical journals, and of the recently-released medical textbook, The Prevention and Treatment of Disease with a Plant-Based Diet, written for doctors.

In this series of classes for the general public, Stewart shares the broad knowledge he has gained studying the impact of food on your health. Each class is approximately 1 hour long.

1. Introduction to Vegan Nutrition

This class will teach you how to get all the nutrients you need on a vegan diet. We go through vital nutrients and how they all come together to give you the healthiest diet there is. We also cover some important topics not usually given enough attention, such as health-promoting phytonutrients, and give you some valuable tips on how you can switch to a vegan diet.

2. Heart Disease – the power of a Plant-Based Diet

You can prevent heart attacks. Following a plant-based diet is powerful when it comes to preventing heart attacks, and getting better if you’ve already had one. Learn how you can reduce your risk of having a heart attack, while treating any coronary artery disease, angina and hypertension. You’ll also learn how to reduce your risk of stroke and lower your cholesterol and thus gain many more healthy years to your life.

3. Type 2 Diabetes and the Plant-Based Diet

With 11 percent of people over the age of 20 having diabetes, plus 23 percent with pre-diabetes, over a third of the country either has diabetes or is on their way to getting it. What most people don’t realize is that they don’t have to suffer.  In this class, Stewart will explain specifically how you can greatly lower your risk of diabetes with a plant- based, or vegan, diet. You also learn how a plant-based diet can be very effective in treating diabetes and its complications. Indeed, a plant-based diet is more effective than the leading medication, Metformin. In addition to presenting the latest research, you’ll learn about practical steps that you can, along with your doctor, take to prevent and treat this ever more common disease. 

4. Preventing Cancer with a Plant-Based Diet

Cancer has become all to common but it doesn’t have to be that way. Stewart will explain how a plant-based, or vegan, diet can reduce your risk of getting three common cancers: colon, prostate and breast cancer.  He will also explain how a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of cancer recurrence in those patients who already have it. Included will be practical tips that you and your doctor can use to make a significant difference.

5. Preventing Breast Cancer with a plant-based diet

In this free online class you will learn about the different forms of breast cancer, and how a plant-based diet can help prevent and treat breast cancer.

6. Gastro Intestinal Diseases – the power of a Plant-Based Diet

Let’s take a journey with your food from swallow to out the “rear end” and learn how a vegan diet can help prevent and treat diseases of the digestive tract along the way. And yes, we’ll tell you about the good bacteria and prebiotics.

Learn how to prevent, and in some cases treat, several diseases including stomach cancer, gall stones, diverticular disease (pockets that form in the large intestine), colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis and even constipation and hemorrhoids. Learn how to have happy guts!

7. Men’s Health – how a Plant-Based Diet can help

Learn about the role of a plant-based diet in men’s health. This class will cover enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction, testosterone levels, fertility, soy and muscular strength.  

8. Women’s Health and the power of a plant-based diet

Learn about women’s health concerns, including puberty, menstrual cramps, sexual dysfunction, pregnancy, breast feeding, osteoporosis, menopause and breast cancer and how a plant-based diet can help.

9. Chronic Pain – how a plant-based diet can help

In this class, Stewart Rose will discuss some of the diseases that cause chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia, both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headache, back pain and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. He’ll explain how a plant based diet can help lessen the pain and discomfort.

Learn about factors that can influence an autoimmune disease and some of the autoimmune diseases, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid diseases, lupus and asthma, that are helped by switching to a plant-based diet.

11. Preventing Blindness with a plant-based diet

In this class, you will learn about the functional anatomy of the eye, and how diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts affect your ability to see. You’ll learn how a plant-based diet can help prevent these diseases from occurring or progressing.

12. Preventing Dementia with a Plant-Based Diet

In this class you will learn how a plant-based diet can reduce your risk of dementia. The dementias covered in this class include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and Parkinson’s disease dementia.

13. How to lower inflammation

Learn how you can lower your level of inflammation with a plant based diet. Chronic inflammation is a very significant health problem. It plays a role in a wide range of diseases from heart disease, diabetes, asthma and ulcerative colitis to Crohn’s disease, prostate cancer, colon cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and even Parkinson’s disease. It turns out that a plant based diet is very effective in lowering your level of inflammation and can help prevent and treat many diseases.
